Cabling is the longest-lived layer in the building. Switches are replaced every five to seven years and cameras sooner, but the cable in the ceiling is expected to carry whatever arrives over the next fifteen. That asymmetry is why cutting cost here is usually a false economy.

We install to a class and then prove it. Every link is tested with a calibrated certifier against the standard it was specified to, and the results are issued as part of handover. Cable that has not been certified is an assumption, and assumptions surface later as intermittent faults nobody can locate.

Labelling and documentation carry equal weight. A patch panel where every port maps to a known outlet turns a moves-and-changes request into a five-minute job. An unlabelled one turns it into an afternoon with a tone generator.

FAQ

Cat6 or Cat6A — which should we install?

Cat6A supports 10GBASE-T across the full 100 metre channel, where Cat6 is limited to considerably shorter distances at 10 Gigabit. Since the cabling will likely outlive several generations of switching, Cat6A is generally the sounder choice for new installations, particularly for building risers and any link you would rather not revisit. Cat6 remains reasonable for short runs to devices that will never need 10 Gigabit.

When do we need fibre instead of copper?

Beyond the 100 metre channel limit for copper, between buildings or floors, where very high bandwidth is needed on a backbone, and in environments with significant electrical interference. Most sites end up with fibre backbone between floors or buildings and copper horizontally to the outlet.

What does certification actually test?

A calibrated certifier measures the electrical performance of each link against the standard it was specified to — insertion loss, near-end crosstalk, return loss, propagation delay and length among them. This is different from a continuity check, which only confirms the wires are connected in the right order. A link can pass continuity and still fail certification, and that gap is where intermittent faults live.

How long does cabling take to install?

It depends on outlet count and how accessible the containment routes are. A small office of thirty to fifty outlets in an accessible ceiling void is usually a matter of days. Occupied premises, concrete cores, listed or restricted buildings and out-of-hours-only access extend it. We give an indicative programme with the BoQ once we have seen the site.

Can you certify cabling that someone else installed?

Yes, and it is a common request before taking over a site or accepting a handover from a fit-out contractor. We test each link and report pass or fail against the relevant standard. Where links fail, the report identifies the fault type, which usually indicates whether the fix is re-termination or a full re-pull.
